Media Release
Jun. 19, 2006

India and Pakistan will seek to register Basmati rice as a ''Geographical Indicator''(GI) in the US and Europe, Indian Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said on Saturday.

The government is working with Pakistan in this regard, he told reporters here. He said GIs would help increase the export value of the product and protect them from being duplicated. "GIs would help do away with spurious products," he said. "We must include a large number of agricultural products, handicraft products, tea in the GI," the Minister said. "Mangoes are going to be an important part for the GI. We are going to export mangoes to the US and Japan," he said
