China and India agreed to reopen a border crossing at Nathu La Pass on July 6, following 44 years of closure due to border conflicts, the China Daily reported.

"(The reopening) will boost the transportation, construction and service industries, paving the way for a major trade route that connects China and south Asia," reported the Daily, quoting Hao Peng, vice chairman of the Tibet region. The China Daily said that the reopening of the pass will allow iron ore and livestock products from India and wool, herbs and electric appliances from China to be transported across the border more efficiently. The Chinese region adjoining Indiacurrently imports and exports to India by sea, going through the port city of Tianjin in China's northeast. The Nathu La Pass is 460 kilometers from Lhasa and 550 kilometers from Calcutta.
