A suspected suicide shoe bomb killed at least 10 people and injured 25 at the Buratha Mosque on June 16 in northern part of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad
Media Release
Jun. 17, 2006

A suspected suicide shoe bomb killed at least 10 people and injured 25 at the Buratha Mosque on June 16 in northern part of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. The imam, Sheikh Jalaluddin al-Saghir, said he believes he was the target. The mosque was the site of a triple suicide bombing April 7, when 90 people were killed. Security has been tighter since then, including high concrete blast walls. Guards watching for suicide belts and vests allowed the bomber through two checkpoints before they noticed he was wearing shoes in the mosque, a religious faux pas. The combination of explosives and ball bearings packed into the shoes went off as the suspect began complying with a guard's request to remove them.
