The head of a Sunni religious group, Yusif al-Hassan, was shot dead by unknown gunmen near his mosque in the Shiite city of Basra, Iraq, on June 16. Hassan served as a senior member of the Association of Muslim Scholars, a Sunni minority group critical of the U.S.-backed political process.
