India's Left parties removed themselves from the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition on US Ambassador's recall issue
Harish Baliga
Feb. 20, 2006

The message was strong but UPA Government is determined in its resolute.

India's Left parties removed themselves from the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition and sided with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Feb. 20. The move is a protest against a letter from U.S. Ambassador David Mulford which criticized West Bengal's Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's remarks against U.S. President George W. Bush at Left rally in January. The Left parties, along with fellow UPA members Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Shiromani Akali Dal and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, then staged a walkout and demanded that Mulford be recalled.
