India plans to facilitate the African infrastructure in that continent.

According to media reports, Indian government will provide half a billion dollars to help finance the construction of a 1,300 km trans-Africa rail network, the Niger government announced.

India has pledged to give 500 mln usd for the 1.5 bln usd network connecting Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso and Niger, allowing the latter two landlocked countries access to the sea, Agence France-Presse reported.

Dubbed Africarail, the project is to be financed through Africa's ambitious development project the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), said the statement.

Beneficiary countries will raise the rest of the funds.

An Indian rail manufacturer will supply 30 engines, build a repair and maintenance workshop in the region and train some 1,190 railworkers.

India made the pledge at a recent meeting of ministers of transport of west Africa held in Dakar, a Niger government statement said.
