Indian Navy eyes China in the east – plans to go global to make its presence felt
Indian navy is focusing east wards to counter the influence of Chinese, American and Russian Navies. The move comes after years of focusing on Pakistan’s Navy in the Arabian sea. Indian Navy plans to stretch out to Indian ocean, Pacific ocean and eventually go global to make its presence felt in every corner of the world.
According to media reports, President A P J Abdul Kalam, who observed the first ever fleet review held on the Eastern seaboard here today, passionately commended the Navy’s affirmation that the road to becoming a regional power would have to begin with engaging East and South East Asia first.
“Nearly 40 percent of the world population lives in our region. The economic growth of this region depends on the heavy transportation in the Indian Ocean, particularly the Malacca Strait.
The Navy has an increasing role to provide necessary support for carrying out these operations,” Kalam said in his address to the Navy after inspecting a fleet review that included over 40 ships and 20 Naval aircraft in an emphatic and stylised bout of power projection. Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash who spoke on the occasion said, “Economic resurgence of our country depends on maritime peace. We are now poised to take our place as a regional power.”
The Navy recently reiterated its interest in receiving a larger role in the security of the Malacca Strait, which in itself, will only be a seed to larger security responsibilities in the region.
