Sign of India aviation booming - US civil aviation regulator FAA decides to open first overseas office in India
Recognising India's stature in the burgeoning aviation market, the US civil aviation regulator has decided to open its first overseas office in India.
The move, which would strengthen the Federal Aviation Administration's partnership with its Indian counterpart, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, is also seen as a measure of India's growing importance in the field of aviation in the region, an official statement said here today.
Announcing the decision, US Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta said this was a symbol of the firm commitment from the Bush administration.
"The open skies agreement that was signed between the two countries was already reaping dividends for the airlines on both sides and the agreement was expanding existing services and introducing new services to meet the needs of the fast developing Indo-US aviation market.
"However, much more needed to be done especially in the area of aviation infrastructure," he said.
Airports, air traffic control systems, aviation safety systems and aircraft certification, all afforded opportunities for additional US-India cooperation, he added.
The liaison office in New Delhi would be staffed full time by a permanent FAA representative.
The announcement came during Indian Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel's official visit to the US, aimed at greater technical cooperation and agreement in the field.
