BJP goes for a collective leadership – ready to take Hinutva in the forefront
According to media reports, The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Sunday said it wanted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to embrace collective leadership and return to its Hindutva roots.
Speaking on the sidelines of the RSS national executive conclave, general secretary Mohan Bhagwat made it clear that he wanted a hardliner to take over as the BJP president in place of LK Advani, who steps down in December.
He told reporters that he also agreed with BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan's suggestion that the BJP should go for a collective leadership from now on.
"We (RSS) have been functioning so (with collective leadership)," he said.
Bhagwat hoped that the new president of the BJP, likely to take office in December, would speed up the process of returning to the ideology of Hindutva, or Hindu nationalism.
According to Bhagwat, the RSS had given a roadmap to the BJP to return to its ideological roots after its electoral rout in 2004, but the "pace of return has so far been very slow".
Bhagwat also said that he would soon meet Advani, who has soured his ties with the RSS by asking it not to interfere in BJP's affairs.
Bhagwat, however, claimed that there was no bitterness between the RSS and Advani. The former deputy Prime Minister's remarks praising Pakistan founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah during his trip to that country had irked the Hindu body.
Around 350 RSS leaders met in Chitrakoot for a three-day annual national executive meet that began on Friday.
