India opens aid camps on Indian side of line of Control to help Kashmiri earthquake victims trapped in Pakistan occupied Kashmir
It was a great gestured by India. It will save a lot of life in Kashmir. It may pose some solid embarrassment for Pakistan who has failed to provide adequate relief for Kashmiris in the Pakistan occupied territory.
India set up aid camps for Pakistani earthquake victims on its side of the disputed Kashmir border, after President Gen. Pervez Musharraf called for Kashmiris to be allowed to cross the cease-fire line to help each other recover from the disaster.
Pakistan said more discussions were needed on the proposal Saturday, but it appeared to signal growing cooperation between the nuclear-armed rivals. It came as the United Nations appealed for nations to give more aid, warning of another wave of deaths unless relief arrives for the millions of homeless before the harsh Himalayan winter hits.
People in Kashmir are worried at Pakistan’s think and wait attitude. On the other hand India has aggressively moved aids to Jammu and Kashmir and now is helping Kashmiris trapped by the Pakistani delays in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
"We urgently need tents, shelter and helicopters for inaccessible areas," said Jan van de Moortele, the U.N.'s humanitarian aid coordinator for Pakistan. "Time is against us, we can buy everything with money, but not time."
Some 79,000 people are believed to have been killed in the Oct. 8 quake, mostly in northwestern Pakistan and its portion of the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir. About 1,360 others have died on the Indian side of Kashmir.
