U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld met with senior South Korean officials in Seoul on Oct. 21, including President Roh Moo Hyun, Foreign Minister Ban Ki Moon, and Defense Minister Yoon Kwang Ung, for annual security talks. The two sides discussed South Korea's desire to take the lead military role in the defense of the Korean peninsula and agreed to accelerate talks to alter the command structure of South Korean forces in wartime. The United States currently has wartime control over the South Korean military through a Combined Forces Command established after the 1950-1953 Korean War.
