India’s outsourcing bandwagon gets a boost with Japan joining America and Europe in outsourcing information technology and business processing systems from India.
Nippon Yusen KK has outsourced part of an ocean liner business system development project to Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (NSI:TCS), the information technology arm of India's Tata Group.
The order was placed by NYK Systems Research Institute (NSRI), the Nippon Yusen information technology subsidiary that handles system development. It calls for TCS to send 25-30 engineers to NSRI's U.S. operation in New Jersey and assign some development work to around 10 engineers in New Delhi. Overall, TCS will handle 10-20 per cent of the project.
The project entails the building of a large-scale system to oversee all aspects of the ocean liner business, from negotiating with clients to issuing cargo bonds and settling payments. It is slated to begin operating in April 2006.
