India turns down US help to quake victims while helping Pakistan to recover from worst quake to hit Kashmir
According to media sources, India has told the US that aid was not required to tackle the post quake scenario in Jammu and Kashmir, according to Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Talking to journalists here on Wednesday, Pranab said US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had called him to enquire if India needed US help in view of the havoc wrecked by Saturday's killer tremor.
Pranab, who was on his way to Kolkata from his native village of Miriti in Birbhum district, said he had told the US Defense Secretary that he had visited the quake hit areas and that there was no need for US aid at the moment.
There was a clause about India and US helping each other in the event of natural calamities according to the recent agreements signed by Pranab during his visit to the country.
He said he was in regular touch with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding the situation in Kashmir.
The veteran Congress leader also said though some bunkers were damaged in the quake there were no security worries because of them. The Minister also confirmed that about 20 tonnes of aid had been sent to Pakistan from India as the country struggled in the face of its worst natural calamity.
