Oct. 12, 2005

South Korea is pushing for more control over its military and wants Wasghington to provide some breathing space.

South Korea wants to hold talks with the United States about regaining wartime control of its military from Washington, a spokesman for President Roh Moo Hyun said. Seoul brought up the issue during a meeting of defense officials from both sides in September, the spokesman said, adding that South Korea is still waiting for a response. The two states have been carrying out a joint study on the "relations of the South Korea-U.S. combined command" since January 2004.
