It may be an early sign of disagreement over military deployment and infrastructure between Japan and America.
U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Oct. 6 canceled a scheduled stop in Japan on his Asia tour. The Japanese-U.S. stalemate over the relocation of the Marine Corps Futemma Air Station in Okinawa is blamed for the cooling in U.S.-Japanese relations, Japanese government officials said. The United States would like to build a civilian-military airport on reclaimed land within the reef near Camp Schwab, but Japan wants the airport to be built within the camp itself.
