India could face estimated accumulated losses of national income to the tune of US$236 billion over the next ten years as a result of ailments such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes : World Health Organization
It can and will be catastrophic unless India focuses on rural development, disease control and issues related to senior citizens.
The World Health Organisation on Wednesday said India could face estimated accumulated losses of national income to the tune of US$236 billion over the next ten years as a result of ailments such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.
While China could have estimated accumulated losses of US$558 billion between 2005-15, Russian Federation could have accumulated losses of US$303 billion, the report titled "Preventing Chronic Diseases: a vital investment" said.
The report said a 2 per cent annual reduction in deaths due to chronic diseases at the national level would also result in an economic gain of US$16 billion over the next 10 years.
In the South-East Asia region, a 2 per cent annual reduction in deaths due to chronic disease could save over 8 million lives in the next 10 years, the WHO report said.
It said global action to prevent chronic disease could save the lives of 36 million people who would otherwise be dead by 2015.
"Currently chronic diseases are by far the leading cause of death in the world and their impact is steadily growing", the WHO report said.
The report said in the South-East Asian Region, 54 per cent of all deaths are due to chronic diseases and 69 million people in South-East Asia are likely to die of such a disease in the next 10 years.
