Iraqi democracy a joke? UN criticizes the change in Iraq's electoral law that will make it difficult for voters to reject the country's draft constitution - the law then revoked
Iraqi politics is infested with vested interests that have assembled in the country to make sure they get what they want. The political process is being changed continuously to accommodate the ones that are in power. The corruption is at highest levels with billions vanishing from everywhere!
The United Nations criticized a change in Iraq's electoral law that will make it more difficult for voters to reject the country's draft constitution in the referendum set for Oct. 15. The change would count votes from all registered voters, rather than votes actually cast. The legal advisor to the U.N. team monitoring the election said that the late change to the rules, which was passed by the country's Shiite-dominated National Assembly, would not meet international standards, and was unacceptable. The change has already been condemned by Sunni leaders.
The Iraqi Parliament voted 119-28 Oct. 5 to restore an original rule regarding the Oct. 15 referendum on the draft constitution. Parliament three days earlier had ruled that two-thirds of registered voters in three provinces would need to vote "no" to defeat the referendum, rather than two-thirds of those who turn out to vote across the country. The United Nations and the United States had urged Parliament to review the rule, saying the changes were unfair to the Sunni minority and did not meet international standards.
