India scraped past New Zealand 2-1 Wednesday to secure a place in the final of the Indira Gandhi Gold Cup women's field hockey tournament.

Australia outplayed Italy 4-1 to stay in the hunt for the second spot in the title contest.

Posting its third consecutive win in the five-nation tournament, India is assured of a spot in the final ahead of its last league outing _ against Australia on Thursday.

Australia has posted two wins and a draw and must beat India if it is to reach the final.

New Zealand has suffered one defeat in three outings. It had one draw and win in its previous two games.

India scored through Sanggai Chanu's deflection of a penalty corner and Saba Anjum's push during a goalmouth melee, but New Zealand pulled a goal back through Honon Dillon.

Open play strikes by Sarah Taylor and Nikki Hudson put the Aussies in command before Angie Skirving converted a penalty corner and a field goal to secure a four-goal lead.

Italy's Matilde Canavosio slammed in a penalty corner drive to reduce the margin five minutes from the end.
