China and India to follow nuclear energy power in coming years –China to build its biggest N-plant in 2006
Sonia Joshi
Sep. 27, 2005

India and China plans to go nuclear fission power in coming years. The courtiers are planning build huge reactors with or without international help.

China is planning to start construction on its biggest nuclear power plant in 2006, the government said on Monday, part of its ongoing efforts to meet increasing energy demands. The six million kilowatt facility will be located in Yangjiang, a port city in southern Guangdong province, and will have six reactors, the official Xinhua News Agency said. More than 90 per cent of the infrastructure has been completed, Xinhua said, citing Zhong Yi, mayor of Yangjiang. A dozen international nuclear power giants are bidding to provide equipment for the plant, Xinhua said, but did not give any more details. The winner will be announced by the end of the year, it said. China, whose first commercial nuclear reactor began operation in 1991, is struggling to meet power demands that are surging amid economic growth that exceeds nine per cent a year. It is also trying to cut its heavy reliance on coal, which has polluted cities with smog. There are two other power plants now operating in Guangdong and another in Zhejiang province in the east. In July, the government announced plans to build 10 other facilities in the east.
