Sania ready to move to the next level – understands doubles games better
Sania says she is ready for the next level.
According to media sources, Tennis’ rising star Sania Mirza may not have met her fans expectations but she says the inaugural USD 170,000 WTA Sunfeast Open tournament has greatly benefitted her, especially in the doubles game.
Sania had teamed up with world’s Number 1 doubles player Virginia Ruano Pascual to be the fourth seeds for the Tier III event in which the duo went down to the top seeded pair of Anastasia Myskina and Elena Likhovtseva in the semifinal on Saturday night.
“I am definitely disappointed. But then you win some and you lose some,” said Sania, around whom the tempo of the event was built.
The 18-year-old, however, said she fully enjoyed playing alongside such a seasoned player as also it was a great learning experience for her.
“I learnt a lot from her, and I now understand the doubles game better than before. I enjoyed all the matches I played along with her. And we tried our best to put up a good show,” Sania said about her 32-year-old Spanish partner.
Comment on squandering a match point in the tenth game by hitting too wide, Sania said, “it was just another point. And you go for winning all the points, not just the match point”.
The Hyderabadi talent had started as the crowd favourite and third seed in the singles event where she was defeated by a much lower-ranked opponent, Melinda Czink of Hungary, in the second round and taking the fizz out of the tournament.
