Pharma outsourcing the next wave in India
Pharmaceutical outsourcing in India is taking off. The new patent law and eagerness of international phama companies to manufacture drugs in India makes it hot for India.
Japanese pharmaceutical company Eisai Co Ltd today announced launch of its India operations and was eyeing the synthetic chemistry, manufacturing and clinical trials segment in the country.
The company has invested US$2.2 million through its wholly-owned subsidiary Eisai Pharmaceuticals India Pvt Ltd till date and was evaluating feasibility of carrying out activities in synthetic chemistry, manufacturing and clinical trials in India, its Deputy President Sochi Matsuno told reporters here.
"The Indian pharmaceutical market is worth US$4.8 billion, and is currently ranked 15th in the world. This made us look towards India as a potential new business cluster," he said. Eisai. which is the first Japanese company to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in India, has started clinical trials at three centres here. "We are focusing in three theraupeutic areas viz. central nervous system (CNS), gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and oncology, said Eisai India Managing Director Deepak Naik.
The company has signed a co-promotion agreement with GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, India to market PARIT (rabeprazole sodium), Essai's original research medicine for gastric disorders.
