Who exported nukes to North Korea? Pakistan confesses but shifts the blame on AQ Khan’s network
Who really exported nukes to North Korea? Pakistan says AQ Khan’s clandestine covert network is responsible. But international think tanks question if they could have ever exported nukes out of Pakistan without Mascara’s explicit knowledge and agreement.
According to media sources, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf believes that disgraced nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan’s proliferation ring exported ‘probably a dozen’ centrifuges to North Korea to produce nuclear weapons fuel. He, however, is not sure if Pyongyang was also given a Chinese-origin design to build a nuclear bomb. In an interview to New York Times, Musharraf also talked about Pakistan’s tentative diplomatic openings towards Israel and its efforts to track down al-Qaeda leaders. About Khan’s proliferation ring, he said, ‘probably a dozen’ centrifuges were exported to North Korea to produce nuclear weapons fuel. However, he said after two years of interrogations there is still no evidence about whether he gave Pyongyang a Chinese-origin design to build a nuclear weapon. Musharraf is to attend the UN General Assembly, besides holding meetings with a host of world leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
