Can BPO competence assessment certification save India from rising number of alleged fraud cases in India's money-spinning business process outsourcing (BPO) industry?
Stung by a rising number of alleged fraud cases in India's money-spinning business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, the IT industry umbrella group Wednesday launched a competence assessment program. The assessment and certification program will aim to ensure the transformation of a ''''trainable workforce'''' into an ''''employable workforce'''', said the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom).
But can this really provide the guarantee that identity theft and financial fraud will not take place? According to international think tank there is a lot of hoopla in this but the cure is not in just creating a certification process. The underpaid Indian employees will cause financial frauds, they claim.
However NASSCOM is going ahead with the certification program. The Government of India is also watching. They are also concerned about the imminent collapse of the BPO industry because of this issue.
According to media sources, stung by a rising number of alleged fraud cases in India's money-spinning business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, the IT industry umbrella group Wednesday launched a competence assessment programme. The assessment and certification programme will aim to ensure the transformation of a ''''trainable workforce'''' into an ''''employable workforce'''', said the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom). In the first phase, the pilot Nasscom Assessment of Competence (NAC) programme will run for three months in three cities - New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore - said Nasscom vice president Sunil Mehta. Around 36 leading ITES (IT-enabled services) BPO companies and nearly 15,000 graduates will participate in the pilot, Mehta told a news conference here. Under the programme, Nasscom, along with Hewitt Associates and industry players, will deploy the assessment and certification framework to ensure a steady supply of quality ITES-BPO professionals to meet current and future requirements. The NAC programme will test the aptitude of a candidate on different skill sets, said Mehta. This will include listening and keyboard skills, verbal ability, spoken English, comprehension and writing ability, office software usage, numerical and analytical skills, and concentration and accuracy. After completion of the pilot programme, Nasscom will announce the national rollout of NAC. Mehta said Nasscom would encourage state governments to commit to the NAC programme to improve employment generation, attract serious investors to the ITES-BPO sector and build a link between education and employability. The need for the introduction of a filtering process for employees in the fast-growing BPO industry came to light after the reported cases of fraud in some companies.
