India and China meet on issues related to human rights
Human rights is a major issue in Asia. India and China met to exchange views on the matter.
India and China have held in-depth exchange of views on the issue of human rights as part of the expanding canvas of bilateral relations between the two Asian giants
A high-level delegation headed by the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Justice A.S. Anand, currently in China, met senior Chinese officials as well as experts and scholars in Beijing and in the eastern metropolis of Shanghai.
The two sides held in-depth discussions on the human rights issue.
The NHRC delegation came here at the invitation of the China Society for Human Rights Studies.
Western human rights groups charge that civil liberties have taken a heavy blow in China despite rapid economic and social progress.
They regularly raise concern about lack of religious and media freedom, the situation in Tibet, forced repatriation of North Korean refugees and the "violent suppression" of protests over rising social problems.
The delegation had also participated in the 10th Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum in Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia during which Justice Anand touched on the initiatives taken by the NHRC in the country during the last year.
The three-day meeting had focused on prevention on torture and other forms of ill-treatment as well as the role of National Human Rights Institutions among other issues.
