What can you do to lower your property tax?
Pete Shorabji
Aug. 26, 2005

Property tax will become the killer. All real estate professionals know that. The way property taxes are computed is a s follows:

The local Government calculates the estimated expenses. That figure is proportionately distributed to all property owners for property tax collection.

It is estimated that soon new homeowners will pay way more in property taxes that their mortgages.

What can you do to lower your property tax?

Here are some tips:

1. Visit you tax assessor in the municipality you live in. Be friendly and try to understand how the assessed value of your home or property is calculated.

2. Before adding anything to your property consult with the tax assessor how the assessment will increase. Different types of constructions are assessed differently.

3. Ask you property tax authorities to provide the property tax rules and regulations. Mostly this is available from State Taxation Department..

4. In many states if you own a farm property you pay little property tax. You don have to farm. You can let others farm your property and you gain half of the produce and a tremendous break in property taxes.

5. If you are attached to religious institutions, look into the rules by which you can qualify for tax exemption.

6. If you are a veteran or senior citizen, you will qualify for property tax break.

More importantly, you must spend some time to read and grasp the property tax process, rules and regulations. Believe it or not you will save a fortune and not become a pray of sky rocketing property taxes.
