Indian workers treated like worms in Qatar

Employers in Qatar labor camp did not pay them salaries. When they complained about non-payment of salaries and inhumane treatments, they were just thrown out into the streets from the labor camps.

According to media sources, ninety-three Indian construction workers in Qatar were allegedly thrown out of their labour camps by their employers in two separate incidents (after they lodged a complaint with the country's embassy about non-payment of salaries.)

The Indian embassy in Qatar has taken steps to ensure that the ousted workers continue to receive accommodation at their camp until air tickets, salary arrears and other benefits have been given to them by their employers, The Peninsula daily said.

The incident, involving the workers from Orissa, belonging to two local contracting companies took place on Monday.

They were recruited by one company but were working for another since July 27 this year.

They arrived here in February this year after paying Rs.45,000 each to the ''Aero Travels'' agent in Mumbai.

The other incident involving some 30 workers, 23 of who are from Kerala occurred last morning, the paper said adding that the workers had filed fresh complaints about pending salary arrears and removal from their camps.

The embassy has contacted Qatar's Human Rights Committee and the Foreign Ministry urging their immediate intervention.

The company paid QR 1,000 to the workers a few days ago to partly clear salary arrears, embassy officials said.

However the employers allegedly made 54 workers sign papers that claimed that they had received full arrears, the officials said.

Nine workers refused to accept the money and sign the papers.
