Al-Queda unleashing hit an run strategy against US forces all over Middle East?

Aug. 19, 2005

According to international think tanks, Al-Queeda is unleashing their latest strategy against American forces – hit and run all over the Middle East.

The Abdullah al-Azzam Brigades of the al Qaeda Organization in the Levant and Egypt claimed responsibility Aug. 19 for the rocket attacks earlier in the day aimed at U.S. Navy ships in Jordan. The group was one of several that claimed responsibility for the July attacks against hotels and a market in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. Its latest claim was posted on an Islamist Web site.

Three Katyusha rockets were fired Aug. 19 from a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of the Jordanian port of Aqaba on the Red Sea, Israeli and Jordanian officials said. One of the three rockets struck near the airport at Israel's beach resort of Eilat, five miles across the water from Aqaba. The other two rockets apparently were fired at the USS Ashland, a ship with the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain that was docked at Aqaba. A Navy spokesman said one rocket flew over the bow of the USS Ashland and struck a military warehouse on the pier at about 8:44 a.m. local time. Jordanian officials said the other rocket struck near a military hospital in the city. One Jordanian soldier was killed and another was wounded. Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said the rocket attacks were apparently coordinated.
