Brazil – start of a grass root level uprise
Sayeed Imam
Aug. 18, 2005

Demonstrators gathered Aug. 17 in the Brazilian capital to protest against corruption and the government of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva. Police estimate that between 12,000 and 15,000 people participated in the protest, organized by the country's leading left-leaning parties. The peaceful demonstration, monitored by 2,000 police, called for da Silva and Congress to resign and for the International Monetary Fund to leave the country.
