America may not tolerate the influence and alliance of Cuba and Venezuela for a long time.

U.S. Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld met with his Paraguayan counterpart, Roberto Gonzalez, in Asuncion on Aug. 17 during a 24-hour visit Rumsfeld began Aug. 16 with a meeting with Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte. Top Pentagon officials said one of the visit's primary purposes was to discuss Cuban and Venezuelan efforts to increase their influence in South America's southern cone. Rumsfeld said he raised the issue of corruption with Paraguayan officials, and he complimented Paraguay for combating criminal activity in the volatile tri-border region where the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet.
