India ready to embark on world’s biggest efforts on Nuke power says Manmohan Singh but what about safety and environmental pollution

With agreement from America Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh boasts massive development of nuclear power in India. But he has forgotten that America itself has restrained its nuke power program because of safety issues and environmental pollution issues. A Cernobyl style catastrophe will wipe out tens of millions of Indians. And where will India keep its nuclear wastes? Even countries like America and Russia with vast landmasses have problems, what will happen to India?

According to media sources, reflecting on his recent US visit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today exuded confidence that India could generate a massive 40,000 MW of nuclear energy in the next 10 years as some of the constraints" hampering the growth have been reduced.

"In my visit to the United States, we have managed to reduce some of the constraints which have been hampering the growth of our nuclear energy programme.

"In the next 10 years, in addition to the 150,000 MW of capacity being added in the thermal and hydro sectors, another 40,000 MW could be generated through nuclear energy," he said in his Independence Day address.

Nuclear energy contributes less than three per cent of the country's total generation capacity at present.

Of the total about 1,16,000 MW installed capacity, nuclear energy generates only about 3,300 MW and as per the government's earlier estimates for capacity addition till the end of the 11th plan period by 2011-12, nuclear power was to contribute only about 10,000 MW of the total 2,00,000 MW.

The Prime Minister's confidence on the quantum jump in the share of nuclear power in the country's total generation capacity in the next ten years indicates the government's special thrust on this critical sector as part of its efforts to achieve energy security, especially given the supply side constraints in conventional energy sectors.
