India rejects Nepal complaint on Rifles – Nepal tilts towards China throwing India into a nightmarish dilemma
India rejected Nepal complain on Rifles. Nepal is planning to tilt towards China from a tilt towards India before. It can smell a nightmare for India in the long run.
A state-run Indian arms manufacturer on Saturday rejected a complaint by Nepal that it supplied the kingdom faulty assault rifles which led to heavy losses in a gunbattle with Maoist rebels this month.
An official of the Rifle Factory Icchapore said the guns may have failed because of poor maintenance by the Nepali army which lost 43 soldiers in the fighting in the west of the country last weekend. Another 75 soldiers remain missing.
"The rifles are war-tested and widely used by our forces in counter-insurgency operations," said P.K. Agarwal, additional general manager of the factory in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.
The Nepali army, quoting soldiers who took part in the 10-hour battle with the guerrillas, said the INSAS rifle frequently became too hot during the fighting and soldiers had to wait for it to cool before they could use it again.
A number of bilateral agreements on trade and commerce will be signed during Nepalese Foreign Minister Ramesh Nath Pandey's visit to China, which has offered $12 million aid to the Himalayan kingdom.
The visit will further consolidate bilateral relations existing between Nepal and China, Pandey, who left today on an 11-day visit to China, told reporters at Tribhuvan international airport.
A number of bilateral agreements covering trade, commerce and culture will be signed during the visit, a senior foreign ministry official said on condition of anonymity.
Pandey is the third high official to visit China within the last couple of months. Unlike India, the US and other countries, China did not criticise the powergrab by King Gyanendra and had termed it as an internal matter of Nepal.
