North Korea tensed about the upcoming joint exercise of US and South Korean forces –Will the show force break out in a real war? Military hotline is in place
North Korea is showing of jitteriness over upcoming the US and South Korean. There are possibilities that an all out war may start based on comments from the North Korean officials. North Korea's military said Aug. 13 that war games planned by the United States and South Korea for later in August are preparation for a pre-emptive attack on the North and an effort to create an "extreme pitch of tension" on the Korean peninsula. South Korean officials said the exercises are largely computer-simulation drills designed to test U.S. and South Korean readiness for military emergencies on the peninsula and that they will not involve a mobilization of forces. The North Korean statement further said the U.S. "arrogant action" leaves Pyongyang with no choice but to "build up deterrence for self-defense."
North and South Korea put a military hotline into service Aug. 13 designed to ease tensions along their disputed western maritime border, South Korean officials said. The two sides engaged in naval clashes in 1999 and 2002 in the disputed area, both suffering significant casualties. Officials said the two have agreed to communicate on the hotline twice a day.
