Taiwan capable of striking Mainland China with indigenous cruise missiles – is Taiwan secretly making nukes?
Speculations are spreading like fire that Taiwan is on its way of making nukes to be able to retaliate if China really attacks. Taiwan has deployed cruise missiles on mobile launchers with a range of about 621 miles that are capable of hitting military targets in southeast China, China Times reported Aug. 12. The missiles were developed by the military-run Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, which also is developing cruise missiles with an approximate 1,242-mile range. International think tanks are not sure if Taiwan really is pursuing secret nuke development projects. However, they are very impressed with indigenous missile technologies.
Taiwan has embarked on its 13th annual attempt to gain membership in the United Nations and has asked the United Nations to help maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait, the government said Aug. 12. A small group of the island nation's allies already has submitted a joint proposal to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to send a special envoy or delegation to Taiwan, according to Taiwanese Foreign Minister Mark Chen. Chen said his country's bid is not intended to challenge China's seat in the United Nations.
