Aug. 12, 2005

Iraq is in a much bigger turmoil that you can imagine. Kurds and Shiites want their own autonomous regions. Sunnis will not give it.
Saleh al-Mutlaq, a Sunni member of the committee drafting Iraq's constitution, said Aug. 11 the committee does not "have time for such maneuvers" in regard to Shiite leader Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim's Aug. 11 statement of support for a federal system of government. Al-Mutlaq said al-Hakim's statement about federalism threatened recent progress made in negotiations with Kurdish leaders. The Kurds have largely governed themselves since 1991, and insist on a continuation of regional autonomy.
