Algeria cracks down on Iraqi insurgent supporters after two Algerian diplomats are killed din Iraq
Media Reports
Jul. 28, 2005

The president's office in Algeria confirmed July 27 that their kidnappers killed two diplomats in Iraq. A leader of the banned Islamist political party Front Islamique de Salut (FIS) was arrested July 26 in Algeria following his remarks praising Iraqi insurgents. Reuters quoted anonymous sources as saying that Ali Belhadj -- deputy FIS leader who was freed in 2003 after a 12-year prison term -- was taken to a police station in Algiers after he said on Al Jazeera satellite television that he prayed for victory against the occupation forces and their allies. He also said that, according to Islamic law, the occupiers and their allies faced the same consequences. Belhadj's detention comes shortly after the Iraqi branch of al Qaeda announced the killing of two Algerian diplomats abducted July 21.
