Members of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's eight-member bloc said July 24 they would abandon the constitutional committee drafting committee in support of other Sunni members that have walked out recently in protest of Sunni exclusion from the process. A committee member and secular leader of Allawi's bloc said the constitution draft that chairman Shaikh Humam Hammudi claims is almost ready to submit is a "draft that we were not consulted about." Shiite member Baha al-Araji said no decision will be taken "without the presence of the brothers (Sunnis) unless there is a reason for the absence. Therefore the committee will be committed to handing over the draft at the time agreed upon."
