Japan plans to deploy missile defense system by March 2005 – India not far behind

Japan and India both plan to deploy missile defense systems using American technologies. Both the countries are threatened by China and both have lower magnitude enemies namely Pakistan for India and North Korea for Japan who are capable of nuke tipped missiles.

Japan could be deploying a missile defense shield by the end of March 2006, a year ahead of schedule, Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun reported July 23, citing government sources. The report comes a day after the Japanese parliament, the Diet, approved a bill permitting the accelerated deployment of the shield at the end of the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2006. A Defense Ministry source told the daily that it could be difficult to achieve more rapid deployment given contractual issues involved in acquiring key technology for the shield from the United States.
