Salman and other Bollywood “machos” on Indian intelligence watch list since 1990s – was Salman a dual agent?
For a long time Indian intelligence agencies and police in Mumbai has been closely but silently watching Salman and other “macho” characters in Bollywood for their connection to Islamic Jihadists, Mumbai as well as Dubai underworld and anti-Indian activities.
According to media sources, in a fresh development in the controversial Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai tape case, Maharashtra government on Wednesday said the actor's cell phone was tapped for three months in 2001 on "suspicion" that calls were made from the same number to gangster Abu Salem.
Police also forwarded the voice samples of both actors to forensic laboratory at Chandigarh on Wednesday to find they match with the voices in the purported talks between them in the audio tape carried by the media recently in which Salman threatened Aishwarya and flaunted his underworld links.
Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio, on Wednesday made a statement in the state Assembly saying the probe into the alleged conversation between Salman and Aishwarya will now be conducted by a two-member team headed by Additional Commissioner of Police K L Bishnoi.
The team, besides ascertaining authenticity of the alleged conversation, would also probe whether Salman had links with the underworld. If necessary, the state would seek legal advice on the issue, Patil said.
The Minister's statement assumes significance as the Mumbai police had so far been silent on whether the Bollywood actor was under its surveillance in 2001 when the purported conversation is believed to have taken place.
According to Patil, the Mumbai police got a tip off on August 27, 2001, that a particular cell number was being used to contact fugitive gangster Abu Salem. "The cell number was kept under surveillance from August 28 to October 25 and it was found that the cell belonged to Salman Khan," Patil said.
