India and Bangladesh push for border security and trade
Kiram Chaube
Jul. 11, 2005

India and Bangladesh met to discuss and resolves issues related to trade and border security.

According to media sources, security and border management were among the issues which figured prominently in the talks between India's Junior Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Bijoy Krishna Handique and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Morshed Khan here.

During the parleys Sunday [10 July], both sides underscored realization of trade and investment potential between Bangladesh and northeastern Indian states, a foreign ministry release said here.

The Indian side also favoured expansion of roads, rail and air connectivity between the two neighbours, it said, as the two discussed the security and border management issues.

Handique also proposed the formation of a Bangladesh-India Parliamentary Friendship Forum comprising lawmakers of the two countries.

In response, Khan said he has already suggested formation of such an inter-parliamentary committee. Dhaka believes in continued dialogue and constructive engagement with India for resolving bilateral issues, he told the delegation.
