Sonia confused – Left and Congress led UPA ready to spur on BHEL
Sonia Gandhi heard it all but could not stop the braking cold and hot war between the Left Front and the Congress led UPA. The strength of UPA comes from the fact the BJP will not support the Left Front’s ideology and stands.
According to media sources, stalemate continued over the BHEL disinvestment issue with Left parties ruling out any dilution of their opposition to it but kept the doors open for further talks asking UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to intervene by taking up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Left leaders, who held second round of discussion with Gandhi in 10 days, said after the meeting that "we have requested her to intervene in the matter as chairperson of the UPA to see that government adheres to provisions of the Common Minimum Programme regarding Navratna (public sector) companies".
CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said after the talks that the Left is hopeful the issue will be amicably resolved.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Ahmed Patel, Political Secretary to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Sources said like in the first meeting, Gandhi expressed problems before the government in reversing the decision to divest 10 per cent equity from BHEL because of serious scarcity of resources.
Sources said Left ruled out any such suggestion insisting that they cannot go back on their stand that there should not be any further disinvestment of Navratna PSUs including BHEL.
The Left leaders, sources said, told Gandhi that in a democracy, government should heed to public opinion and therefore, it would be better that the decision is reversed.
Both sides said that the issue of Indo-US Defence agreement, which has come under attack from the Left parties, did not come up for discussions and the meeting was solely restricted to the BHEL issue.
