Deadly Avian Flu spreading all over the world through migrating geese - end of Human civilization by 2012?
Scientists have found that strains of H5N1 avian influenza virus is being carried by migrating geese from Western China to all over the world. This can have deadly effect on World population in 2005-2006. The geese were found migrating towards Indian Himalayas, Bangladesh, South-east Asia and to Australia and New Zealand.
Another set of birds were migrating to Siberia, Alaska, Canada and America. Experts have called for urgent action to prevent the disease, which has killed 54 people, from escaping its stronghold in Southeast Asia and in the long run to the rest of the world.
Yi Guan, a virologist with the joint influenza research centre at the University of Hong Kong, said: "We have to take action right now. These are ideal conditions for the virus to spread and when September comes the birds will take the virus away. This is a major concern to me."
The virologists are so worried because this is the first time the virus, common among farmed chickens, has shown it can spread between wild birds.
Dead wild birds with symptoms of avian flu have been found before, but always close to poultry farms.
The latest epidemic was first detected on April 30 in bar-headed geese at Qinghai Lake. By May 20 it had killed some 1,500 birds. Brown-headed gulls, great black-headed gulls and great cormorants were also infected.
The H5N1 virus is getting spread to Indian birds through these migrating Geese. The Indian birds pass these on to birds fro Europe and Africa, These finally is transferred to birds form North and South America.
According to international think tanks of world heath issues, a version of H5N1 that can spread from Human to Human is forming and it is just a matter of time. If that happens the virus can wipe out the entire human civilization by 2012.
