Al-Queda plans to run a shadow Government in Iraq as international pressure mounts on replacing US led coalition forces with U.N. peacekeeping force
Al Queda announced several communiqué as if it was running a shadow Government in Iraq. The European Parliament called for replacement of US led coalition forces in Iraq by U.N. peacekeeping force.
A senior member of the European Parliament issued a report July 6 calling for U.S.-led foreign troops in Iraq to be phased out quickly and replaced by a U.N. security force. The report by Greek conservative Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos said the key to improving the security situation in Iraq is to reduce the Western military presence. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, however, expressed skepticism that other countries could be persuaded to send troops for a U.N. peacekeeping force in Iraq.
Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi announced the formation of a new unit called the Omar Corps in an audiotape posted to the Internet on July 6. Al-Zarqawi said the Omar Corps will fight the Shiite Badr Brigade, the militia of the largest Shiite party in Iraq, the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq. He also rejected the possibility of abandoning the insurgency in favor of peace talks with the U.S. or Iraqi governments, saying the Iraqi army is as great an enemy as the United States.
An Internet statement signed by the al Qaeda organization in Iraq says the group's sharia court has decided to transfer the Egyptian Ambassador to Iraq Ihab al-Sherif to its fighters to carry out the punishment for apostasy against him. The statement said because the Egyptian government had allied with Jews and Christians, the ambassador is guilty of apostasy, or changing religion. Apostasy is punishable by death under Islamic law.
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi allegedly released an audiotape July 6. The tape rejects the possibility of peace talks and calls the Iraqi army a threat as big as the U.S, Army. The voice on the tape also says a new command to fight Iraq's Shiite militia would be formed. The tape said, "Some say that the resistance is divided into two groups -- an honorable resistance that fights the non-believer-occupier and a dishonorable resistance that fights Iraqis." The tape also acknowledges the pressure to abandon the insurgency in Iraq and said it "saddened" al-Zarqawi. The tape also said the Americans planned to invade Syria.
