Australia moves ahead with Asian alliance – United States worry the development but Australia indifferent
Australia gains by signing more strategic alliances with its neighboring countries especially with the booming Asia. Australia plans to sign a Treaty of Amity and Cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in July. This new alliance worries the United States, Australia's most significant strategic and political partner. However, Canberra stands to gain much more from an alliance with Asia than it stands to lose from potentially damaging its relations with the United States. Australia is expected to announce its plan to sign the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in July. The EAS (East Asia Summit) will expand the ASEAN+3 -- the 10 ASEAN nations plus China, South Korea and Japan -- to include Australia, India and New Zealand.
America worries Australian initiative in becoming an ally to Asia. The strategic defense initiatives, missile defense initiatives and above counter terrorism strategic alliance can get compromised at the cost of the Asian alliance. America considers Australia as the backbone of its Asian strategic initiatives in Asia. Australia on the other hand considers the Asian alliance critical for its security and long-term prosperity.
