France joining America led coalition in Iraq?
France and other European NATO partners may be moving closer to joining the coalition forces in Iraq as America actively seeks an exit strategy.
France is willing to take 80 of the 800 members of the Iraqi military and police that the European Union has pledged to train in the effort to increase the capabilities of the country's security forces, French Defense Minister Michelle Alliot-Marie said June 30. Alliot-Marie said that the 80 would be trained either in France or in a third country, and he added that France is not considering sending any of its troops to Iraq.
According to international think tanks, France and Germany may be moving forward to take charge in Iraq as America decides to let them come in.
The most interesting thing will be to see if France and Germany will side with the Baathists. In recent days Americans have found that they need the Sunnis in the Government to defeat the foreigner controlled Islamic Jihadists and Al-Queda related groups.
It is possible, eventually some accord will be reached where NATO will take over Iraq operations to finally handover the powers to Iraqis while Sunnis again become center stage of the power structure.
