India wonders at reason for Nepal’s desire for foreign arms
India expressed concern on Nepal’s desire to acquire foreign arms. The Kingdom is facing terrorism from Maoists. India has shown reluctance in supplying arms to Nepal without the monarchy’s inclination towards multiparty democracy.
According to media sources, India has expressed concern after the Nepalese security establishments issued global tenders for supplies of weapons, aircraft and helicopters for security purposes. India says the invitations for applications from foreign arms manufacturers by the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) and the Home Ministry in recent weeks could jeopardize the "traditional and special relations" that the armies of the two countries enjoy. On 18 June, Nepalese Army Headquarters published its call for tenders in government owned media, calling on foreign weapons firms to send in their bids.
Although army officials say the tender is a routine procedure for the upcoming fiscal year, Indian officials say the Nepalese move could also hit the morale of the 40,000 Indian Gurkha troops who hail from Nepal. The Indian foreign ministry is still pursuing its wait and watch policy. Although India had said it would release non-lethal military equipment, in the pipeline, from the meeting between Nepalese King Gyanendra and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Jakarta in April, India is yet to do so.
