Oil crisis bring coal driven steam engine back in Indian Railways
Lalu finally did something noteworthy. He has decided to revive the steam engines the wake of oil price spike and booming import bill.
According to media sources, Ruling out hike in passenger and freight fare, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said on Saturday that he would revive the steam engines to cope with skyrocketing petroleum products.
“We have the resources - coal and water to deal with the ever increasing prices of petroleum products and the steam engine is the best alternative,” Lalu said addressing the concluding session of the three-day cultural meet organised by the East-Central Railway here.
He said the Railway Ministry would soon lay a special track for speedy transportation of goods across the country as the goods trains according to “my knowledge never traverse more than 25 kms in an hour”.
Lalu said that work on the special railway line for the goods train between New Delhi and Mumbai would start soon and added that it would generate employment opportunities.
Changing tracks, the Railway Minister, had a laugh and tried to rub salt on the plight of more than 146 new faces of dissolved Assembly by stating that they could not enjoy the privilege of railway coupons whereas the defeated ex-ministers and MLAs are enjoying the benefits.
“Bhgwan marta nahin hai budhi bhrast kar deta hai” (god does not kill but corrupts the mind of the people), Prasad said having a dig at the NDA and LJP MLAs bid to form a government. He, however, did not mention any party of their leaders.
He said the Railway artist would perform here at the historic Gandhi Maidan after the elections and announced that wards of railway employees would be given jobs.
Lalu also announced a cash prize of Rs 8000 to 300 railway employees and Rs 5000 to their wards who participated in the three day cultural function.
He sat in rapt attention for more than four hours at the function and even danced to tune of bhangra dance performed by the Railway Coach Factory, Kapurthala.
