Iraqi Sunnis may be happier today – will insurgency end?
Hiren Tarafdar
Jun. 10, 2005

It was a smart move by the newly elected Iraqi Government. A very smart move by President Talabani.

Iraq's Sunni Arabs received 27 seats on the country's constitutional committee, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said June 9. Sunni leaders demanded 25 seats as a condition for their participation in the drafting of the constitution, raising the total number of seats to 80. This contradicts an earlier report that the Sunnis would only receive 15 seats.

Some Iraqi Sunnis want to participate in the Iraqi Constitution formation process. Some oppose violently. But the new move by the Iraqi Government says they are ready share power and Iraqi democracy with the Sunnis.

It is possible that the insurgency may increase and then end. The initial reaction of those against Sunni participation will obviously increase insurgency and even threaten the moderate Sunnis against participating in the process. But later no one knows if insurgency will hold ground. No insurgency can continue without popular support.
