Nearly 10% of Indian population owns telephone now – a big market waiting for western and Japanese companies
In recent days many Indians own telephones.
According to media sources, the proportion of Indians owning telephones improved to 9.62 percent of the one billion-plus population, up by more than two percentage points, the country's telecommunication regulator said Wednesday.
Indians owned 102.49 million phones _ 55.38 mobiles and 47.11 million landlines _ at the end of May 2005, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in a statement.
Indians have bought 23.08 million phones in the last 12 months, increasing the number of users by more than two percentage points, according to the regulatory body.
In May alone, 1.70 million mobile phone connections and 0.61 million landline connections were sold, maintaining India's position as one of the world's fastest growing communication markets.
Phone usage in India languished under four percent for decades, but a booming economy and falling prices fueled consumer demand over the past three years.
