India plans to expel illegal ship with toxic waste docked at the Gujrat port of Alang since April 19
The Danish Ship was first known as Kong Fredrik IX. It then changed its name to Riky, entered Indian water illegally and is now docked at the Gujrat port of Alang since April 19. The ship contains asbestos, waste oils, paint chips and other hazardous materials. Danish authorities did not authorize or send the ship to India.
Supreme Court of India’s Monitoring Committee on Hazardous Wastes has decided that the Danish ship Riky must be forced from Indian waters and has asked for an inquiry to identify the parties responsible for the vessel's ''illegal entry''.
A letter by a Danish minister is reported to have said: ''I am surprised that an illegal arrival is being treated as acceptable for ship-breaking when it has not been earlier decontaminated to remove asbestos, waste oils, paint chips and other hazardous materials.
''This will set a wrong precedent and encourage not only more such wicked incidents but defeat the very purpose of the apex court's directives on ship-breaking.''''
It took India six weeks to proceed against the ship’s continued presence in Port Alang in Gujrat.
