China plans rapid expansion of its military, political and fiscal mussel to secure strategic mineral resources and strategic presence
China the fast growing emerging super power understands that in order for it to compete effectively with America, it needs mineral resources. The Nazi Germany understood that it can never become and exert as a global power unless it can capture Soviet mineral resources. China is not Germany. But countries like India and China are concerned about mineral resources with more than 2.5 Billion people in central-South Asia.
China is rapidly expanding its military and fiscal mussel to secure strategic mineral resources and strategic presence.
China is considering the possibility of deploying a military base in Kyrgyzstan, Chinese media reported on May 31. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said such a base would help fight three threats -- terrorism, separatism and extremism. Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Roza Otunbaeva denied that the Kyrgyz government has discussed the possible deployment of a Chinese base in Kyrgyzstan and said Kyrgyzstan will not become a hub of foreign military bases for various countries.
China also plans to invest $550 million in a Chilean copper mining venture, China Minmetals Corp. and Chile's Codelco said on May 31. Under the agreement, Minmetals will receive 57,000 metric tons of almost pure copper annually over 15 years and have first option on taking a stake in a mine in northern Chile. China Development Bank will finance Minmetals in the venture. The Chinese government also has encouraged Shanghai Baosteel Group and Jiangxi Copper Co. to buy stakes in foreign mines.
